Houston
offers many options for those seeking higher education. The city has three
large universities, a number of junior and community colleges, private
colleges, and state-school affiliated graduate schools.
RICE
UNIVERSITY

Rice
University is the city's oldest university. Founded in 1891, Rice is a
small, private school with a national reputation for the education of
science and engineering students. Rice is located in central Houston near
the Texas Medical Center on a beautiful, tree-lined campus. The school
is part of the Southwest Conference, to which it brings academic excellence,
particularly in the number of National Merit Scholars who enroll there
each year. Enrollment at Rice is approximately 4,000.

The
University of Houston is by far the largest university in the city, with
about 45,000 students. The UH West Houston Institute (located in the Park
development on the Katy Freeway), UH Woodlands Institute, and the UH Clear
Lake Campus offer upper-level courses, graduate courses, and continuing
education. The University of Houston excels in several areas. The schools
of optometry, hotel/restaurant management and law bring prestige to UH.

Texas
Southern University, Houston's third largest public university, was originally
founded as an all black school. Today TSU, located in central Houston,
has an international student body and advanced studies in many areas,
including law.
