RECREATION

  • In Clear Lake, visitors and residents alike enjoy a wealth of sights to see, places to go, and things to do. One of the area's hottest attractions is Space Center Houston, a $70 million, 183,000 square foot entertainment and educational complex designed by Disney Imagineering. Hands on space related experiences entertain both young and old. In addition to a full size reproduction of the space shuttle, guests can use computer stations to perform astronaut operations with trainers similar to the ones the astronauts use to launch a satellite or land a shuttle. Missions can be viewed in progress with briefings by NASA scientists and astronauts. The theaters, including an IMAX screen, feature space flight films. Visitors can climb into an astronaut jet pack and repair a satellite just as the astronauts do. A tram tour of the Johnson Space Center complex includes Mission Control, Rocket Park and previously off-limits areas like the WET-F, the weightless environmental training facility.
  • Clear Lake now houses the Texas Ice Stadium, which offers lessons, skate rentals, a public rink, ice hockey leagues, and figure skating events.
  • In League City, Stardust Trailrides offers a range of trail rides on a 1000 acre working ranch. This is the largest equestrian center in the Gulf Coast.
  • Located in Webster, Putt Putt Golf & Games hosts a family day of fun with go carts, bumper boats, miniature golf courses, batting cages, a gameroom, and laser-tag.
  • Located in Galveston, Moody Gardens is an exceptional eco-attraction complex drawing more than one million visitors a year. The complex includes a Rainformationrest Pyramid, an IMAX 3-D Theater & Ridefilm, the Palm Beach Play Area, acres of soft white sand, freshwater lagoons, beach volleyball courts, and a yellow submarine for kids. The newest addition in '97 is the Discovery Pyramid, where you ran explore space exhibits designed in collaboration with NASA's Johnson Space Center. Planned for 1999 is the Oceanarium, which will host marine life from around the world. Also at Moody Gardens is the Hope Therapy facility, a riding program for those with physical and emotional disabilities, a horticultural therapy garden, a children's leaming center, and a 47,000 square foot Convention Center. Under construction is a 10 story, 300 room luxury hotel scheduled for completion in 1998.
  • Just south of Clear Lake is the Gulf Greyhound Park. Located between Houston and Galveston, it is the world's largest and best greyhound racetrack. Greyhound racing has become the 6th largest spectator sport in America!
  • Sam Houston Race Park presents thoroughbred and quarter horse racing at a state-of-the-art facility which is open year round.
  • Six Flags Houston-AstroWorld is a 75 acre theme park boasting over 100 rides, 10 of which are roller coasters. The latest '97 additions to this theme park are the Dungeon Drop and the stand-up roller toaster, Batman the Escape.
  • Neighboring Astroworld is Six Flags Waterworld with water slides, a wave pool, a children's area and more.
  • The Astrodome, adjacent to the Astroworld theme park, was labeled 'the Eighth Wonder of the World' when it first opened in 1965. You can take an hour-long tour of the stadium, offered daily, except when preempted by an event.
  • In North Houston, the biggest water park in Texas, Splashtown, is located on 50 acres. Over 40 rides, water slides and entertaining shows can be enjoyed.
