"Landlubbers"
take heart! For those who prefer dry land, the area also boasts nine golf
courses. Landscaped public parks offer hiking trails, tennis facilities,
picnic areas, playgrounds and ball fields.
Camping
is great in Texas. Nearby, in our own Houston area, you will find quality
camping facilities administered by federal, state and local government
authorities. Three camping and RV parks also serve the local area. For
area locations contact the Texas Department of Transportation, Travel
and Information Division. (P.O. Box 5064, Austin, TX 78763).
Nature lovers will be fascinated with the nature trails, hiking and exhibits
at the Armand Bayou Nature Center, the largest urban wildlife refuge and
wilderness preserve in the United States. The center offers over 2000
acres of bayou, forest, and prairie that is refuge for over 360 species
of animals and birds. Guided tours and special activities are offered
throughout the year. Also at Armand Bayou is the Jimmy Martyn Farm, a
re-created 1800's working farm where both children and adults go back
in time to discover how things were done on the farm a century ago. Nearby
is the Bayou Wildlife Park, a private animal reserve with 86 acres of
natural habitat. Located between Dickinson and Alvin, it houses a variety
of birds and exotic wildlife roaming freely through prairies and woods.
Take tram rides through the park with frequent stops to meet and feed
the animals while your guide delivers educational talks.
